The next day-
Luke went back to his Dad to take a measurement to build him a better suit. (Anakin agree’s since he is lying down for a while. He wanted to do this while his dad was in a stretched out way. He wanted to be prepared, even though his Dad said wait. Luke then mentions, “Dad, there is someone who wants to meet you. He came to me about two days ago after he got a letter. Is this all right? Anakin has a small tube running in his mouth right on the right side going to an oxygen connector and also to aide in healing his organs that were damaged during the fight so when he talks, he speaks like he getting his teeth done. Anakin replies “I don’t know if I am ready to see anyone. I look terrible.” Luke tells his dad that having this person come will only increase his will to live because he actually has a “friend”. (Luke was a bit taken aback by using this word but he didn’t know what other word to use). Friends are good to have Dad”, says Luke. Anakin knows the word friend and uses it also. “Who is this “friend?” Anakin chimes in. Luke answer’s, his name is Firmus Piett from your Super Destroyer ship.” Anakin thinks back, “Admiral Piett?” “I thought he died in the war? Have you two met?” Luke answers with a positive note that Piett wants to come and help. He is very happy you have another chance, father.” Anakin then wonders if he knows. “Does he know about me?” “Yes, father, he knows everything. We met a few days ago and talked for a several hours. He wanted to know why all this happened to you and also why you have to be in the suit.” “Ok, son. I will try, said Anakin.
Two days later-
Piett called Luke asking if today is the day for him to meet his past Lord. (Piett, still refers to Anakin as “Vader” since he doesn’t know about Anakin’s change of identity). Luke then answered “yes, but let’s do it tomorrow. Have your bag packed; you can stay with me here at the medical facility. I am sure they have rooms for Admirals”. Piett was getting nervous at the thought of meeting his ol’ Lord; he wondered if there would be any bad emotions that would cause Vader to destroy him for returning old memories. But he desperately wanted to see him. Piett came to the medical center where Luke was staying to meet and together they both went to Vader’s room.
Right outside of Anakin’s room, the Doctor stopped them both with an update of how he is doing. “Your father is doing much better, Luke.” “That’s good, Doctor, thanks,” said Luke. Luke went inside his father’s room and talked for a short time. “Father, I am so glad to see you, how are you doing?” “I am doing fine, son. Did you bring Admiral Piett with you?” Luke said, “yes and he is waiting outside the door.” Anakin was nervous at meeting his former Admiral from his ship, but he wants to give it a try since he was working hard at moving forward. “Ok, son, you can let him in”, said Anakin.
Luke strode over to the door and briefly said, “Firmus, my father is still resting, but is ready to see you, just know he doesn’t know how you will react to his looks, and so be gentle.” “I will, Luke”, said Piett. At this moment Piett walked into the room where Anakin lay in bed with wires going in and out of his body. “Hi, my Lord, it is so nice to see you again”. At this moment, Piett was shocked at what he saw, but he did not want Vader to be ashamed or embarrassed. He was just happy to see that he lived through the explosion of the Death Star and the Star Destroyer. Piett came over to Vader’s bed so that he could see him and began talking. (Reader: remember Piett doesn’t know that Vader is now Anakin). Anakin was feeling nervous. Luke loved seeing the joy coming out from his Dad. “Hi, Admiral Piett”, said Anakin with a shy, nervous tone. (Anakin could not talk all that well because he still had a tiny tube running into his mouth). “I thought you were killed in the attack”, said Anakin. “No, said Piett, I was diving into the lower command center with Commander Gherant when I accidentally bounced and ended up in an escape pod off the Super Destroyer ship moments before it crashed into the Death star. Something pulled me into it. How are you doing, my Lord?” “Anakin”, said the former Lord in a small soft tone. “What?” said Piett. “My real name is Anakin.” Just then Piett realized that his former Lord is really a person and not an evil Lord as he once was. It finally sank in. Luke went over to them both and sat down in the chair next to his father’s bed. “Are you doing ok, Dad?” asked Luke. “Yes”, said Anakin. Anakin looked to Piett and said, “You were the best Admiral, I had”. Piett sighed and said, “Oh thanks my Lor-, I mean Anakin. I very much wanted to please you and help you during the war, but I am glad it’s over. I am also glad to meet you this way and not in that awful armor suit. You look very well and I am looking forward to seeing your progress.” “Yes, said Anakin, please come back.” Just then Anakin started to tear upon hearing that a close friend wanted to come and see him after all he had done. He knew what a friend was, but he knew he didn’t have any when he was an evil Lord. He now has every chance in the world to get better and to get to know his son and daughter in the coming years.
Luke didn’t want a whole bunch of talking to take place since his father was just in the coma, so he chimed in-“father, Piett and I have spent some time talking and we are combining our talents and are planning on working together to get you in a better suit.” Anakin smiled at Luke’s suggestion. Thoughts are running through Anakin’s mind of the idea of seeing what life is like now that he has a second chance. Piett, still nervous and somewhat shaken doesn’t know what else to say so he makes his way over to Luke. “Father, says Luke, We must go now and let you rest more. I will be back tomorrow to see how you are doing”. Luke and Piett said their goodbyes and then left to their separate rooms at the medical center. Luke has made arrangements for his father to be shipped to the prosthetics lab for further updates when he is better.
To be continued in part two.
Moral of this story: It goes to show that knowing you have siblings is one thing, but sometimes just knowing you have a friend is another feeling no one should live without.
